Visit to Ann Dever Memorial Regional Park

We decided to create a blog to share our birding adventures.  We love to explore Englewood and the surrounding areas.  Each outing is fun and exciting.  We're often blessed with an unexpected sighting.  For example, today we visited the Ann Dever Memorial Regional Park on San Casa Road.  We were returning to see a family of Common Gallinules.  On a previous visit we discovered them in one of the ponds.  We found them again and the babies are growing up fast.  Our unexpected sighting, was a Black-Crowned Night-Heron, tucked away in the reeds.  We got some great photos.
We also saw a Great Blue Heron, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Killdeers and Boat-Tailed Grackles.  In the distance, we heard a Northern Flicker and a Red-Bellied Woodpecker.  We also saw a Least Bittern and added him to our life list.  This "pesky" Bittern is very skittish and very camera shy.  We're determined to get better photos of him.  Watch out for the gators.....tweet.....tweet!!

  1. It has been fascinating to watch the Baby Gallinules mature from black fuzzy little newborns to their grayish smooth feathered look. It has been about 3 weeks since we first came across them. I also noticed that their "peeping" call was more constant as newborns and now 3 weeks later, the "peeping" sound has started to decrease.
