A Hot Day on the Great Florida Birding Trail

Today we took a short drive to the Tippecanoe Environmental Park in Port Charlotte.  The park is on the south side of Charlotte Sports Park, spring training home of the Tampa Bay Rays.  It was a very hot day and we hiked for over an hour.  Thank God Florida is flat.  The park is listed as a stop along the "Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail".  According to their publications we could expect to see Black-Necked Stilts, Mottled Ducks, Common Gallinules, King Rails, Pine and Prairie Warblers and a resident family of Florida Scrub-Jays.  We heard the Scrub-Jays squawking in the distance, but never saw them.  Another visit in the fall, perhaps during migration, may prove more fruitful and no doubt cooler.
There were wading birds at the large pond near the stadium parking lot.  We saw a Tricolored Heron, a Little Blue Heron and a Great Egret.  Joan also got some great shots of several Butterfly species, including the White Peacock.  Keep on birding and stay hydrated.....tweet.....tweet!!
